Personal information is information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable whether the information or opinion is true or not, and whether the information is recorded in a material form or not.
Australia 21 is committed to protecting the privacy of personal information which the organisation collects, holds and administers.
Australia21 recognises the essential right of individuals to have their information administered in ways which they would reasonably expect – protected on one hand, and made accessible to them on the other. These privacy values are reflected in, and supported by, our core values and philosophies.
What personal information we collect
The types of information we collect and hold about you include your name, address, email address, and telephone number and, for our volunteers, curriculum vitae information.
We only collect and store personal information about you when you voluntarily provide it through an activity that asks for information, such as:
- Sending us an enquiry or feedback
- Participating in a survey
- Subscribing to our newsletter
- Making a donation
- Seeking to volunteer.
Where applicable your credit card details are provided to our third party secure online payment system and are not stored by or passed to A21 in any form.
Why we collect your personal information
We collect personal information to allow us to send you information on A21’s organisation and projects, to thank you if you donate and, if you are a volunteer, to enable us to be able to match your skills and expertise with volunteer opportunities.
We will only use your personal information for the purposes for which you gave it to us. We won’t use or disclose your personal information for any secondary purpose, unless:
(a) that secondary purpose is related to the primary purpose for which we collect that information and you would reasonably expect the disclosure in the circumstances; or
(b) you have given us your consent.
Australia21 has adopted the following principles as minimum standards in relation to handling personal information. We will
- Collect only information for the purpose for which you gave it to us.
- Use and disclose personal information only for our primary functions or a directly related purpose, or for another purpose with the person’s consent
- Store personal information securely, protecting it from unauthorised access
- Ensure that stakeholders are informed as to why we collect the information and how we administer the information gathered.
- Provide stakeholders with access to their own information, and the right to seek its correction.
How we collect and hold information
We collect and hold personal information you provide us through our website, over the phone, or by email or mail. For example, when you send an email to us or give us information over the phone, we may retain this in order to respond to your inquiry.
How we make sure your personal information is protected
We take appropriate security measures to protect against unauthorised access to or unauthorised alteration, disclosure or destruction of your personal information. Personal information is held only for as long as the personal information remains relevant to the purpose for which it was collected or if you ask for it to be deleted.
Unsolicited personal information
We don’t usually collect unsolicited personal information. Where we receive unsolicited personal information, we’ll determine whether or not it would have been permissible to collect that personal information if it had been solicited.
If we determine that collection would not have been permissible, to the extent permitted by law, we’ll destroy or de-identify that personal information as soon as practicable.
Access and correction
We will take all reasonable steps to ensure any personal information we collect, use or disclose is up to date and accurate. If you believe personal information we hold about you is not up to date or accurate, you may ask us to correct it. You may ask us to provide you with details of the personal information we hold about you, and copies of that information.
