UN to consider world response to illicit drugs


On 19-20 April 2016 at the United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) in New York, the world will ponder how best to respond to the problem of illicit drugs.

‘Astonishingly it will be the first time since 1998 that the international community has come together to discuss and consider the problem. Sadly, at this stage, it appears very likely that once again they may ignore the arguably overwhelming evidence that the global illicit drug policy of the last half-century has failed disastrously.

I am no drug use advocate and I remain essentially indifferent to drugs. However I hate with a passion the harms that drugs – and bad policy – wreak. Surely, sooner or later, the international community will have to grasp the nettle and move to implement genuine change. Let’s look at the facts.’ Read more …
